Root Canal Treatment Process

Endodontic treatment is one of the commonly feared dental treatments, however, today’s dental technology, as well as our professional and experienced dentist at Jericho Dental can make the process as smooth, simple, and comfortable as can be.

First step is to make an opening into the chewing surface of the tooth, creating access to the pulp chamber. The infected pulp is removed and space is cleaned thoroughly. The pulp chamber and root canal is then filled and sealed carefully. In most cases, a full-coverage dental restoration, such as a dental crown or dental onlays, has to be attached to the tooth to prevent further damage and restore the tooth’s shape, strength and function.

Gingivitis can be controlled and treated with regular brushing and flossing, and routine dental cleanings by our professional dental hygienists at Jericho Dental. If left untreated, the minor gum inflammation will worsen and the disease will get into the more serious stage, called Periodontitis. Dental pockets form, where the gum separates from the teeth, often causing it to be noticeably receded, swollen, red, and tender. Bone loss may occur and if left to advance bone destruction continues and the tooth will loosen to the point of falling out or requiring extraction. Signs for periodontitis include:

It is normal to feel some soreness for a few days after a tooth is removed. Any discomfort can usually be relieved by taking over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. You should also hold an ice pack on the outside of the cheek: place it on for 5 minutes, then take it off for 5 minutes, and repeat as needed for one hour to reduce the potential swelling in the first 24 hours.
